Recent Rescue

Saved by the Buffalo Feathers Farm: Our latest rescue story

One of our most recent rescues was a Pekin or White Pekin duck.

Heritage for this American breed of domestic meat duck has it coming to the United States from China in the nineteenth century. Many of these ducks were reared on Long Island, New York, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, from which the breed derived its nickname — Long Island Duck.

Incidentally, when I used to live and work in New York City, I remember traveling to Long Island and there’s still lots of these white ducks there. Our kids loved Jones Beach!

These ducks are large and solidly built with a body that’s rectangular as seen from the side. The plumage is creamy white, the legs and feet are a yellowish orange, and the beak is yellow, fairly short, and almost straight.

Oh, and they love the water!
